Devotion: A Memoir $24.99 In her mid-forties and settled into the responsibilities and routines of adulthood, Dani Shapiro found herself with more questions than answers. Was this all life was-a hodgepodge of errands, dinner dates, e-mails, meetings, to-do lists? What did it all mean? Having grown up in a deeply religious and traditional family, Shapiro had no personal sense of faith, despite repeated attempts to create a connection to something greater. Feeling as if she was plunging headlong into what Carl Jung termed the afternoon of life, she wrestled with self-doubt and a searing disquietude that would awaken her in the middle of the night. Set adrift by loss-her father’s early death; the life-threatening illness of her infant son; her troubled relationship with her mother-she had become edgy and uncertain. At the heart of this anxiety, she realized, was a challenge: What did she believe? Spurred on by the big questions her young son began to raise, Shapiro embarked upon a surprisingly joyful quest to find meaning in a constantly changing world. The result is Devotion: a literary excavation to the core of a life. In this spiritual detective story, Shapiro explores the varieties of experience she has pursued-from the rituals of her black hat Orthodox Jewish relatives to yoga shalas and meditation retreats. A reckoning of the choices she has made and the knowledge she has gained, Devotion is the story of a woman whose search for meaning ultimately leads her home. Her journey is at once poignant and funny, intensely personal-and completely universal. |

Enlightenment for Idiots $14 A yoga teacher finds new life in India-just not the one she was expecting. Nearing thirty, Amanda thought she”d be someone else by now. Instead, she”s an ex-nanny yogini-wannabe who cranks out For Idiots travel guides. True, she has a sexy photographer boyfriend, but he”s usually off shooting a dogsled race in Alaska or a vision quest in Peru-or just hooking up with other girls. However, she”s sure her new assignment to the ashrams of India will change everything. What she finds, though, is an ashram run by investment bankers, a model-obsessed guru, tantra parties, and silent retreats. India, it turns out, is not the spiritual refuge she”d pictured. But when a wandering mystic offers her an enigmatic blessing, Amanda realizes a new life may be in store for her after all. |

Invading Goa $97 New tourism — travel that claims to be more ethical or ecological than old tourism, is the industry that offers yoga retreats and herbal tea tours, henna holidays and temple walks. Goa has always been a draw for the masses eager to find spirituality and escape the pressures of modern life so it is no surprise that new tourism is thriving in the holidy capital of India. In this book, Vardalos argues that new tourist genres are all the same, regardless of their specific claims, because of the ideology that encompasses all of them: imperialism. She argues that new tourism in Goa does not offer an ethical nor ecological alternative to the mass travel of the past and is in fact, no different than invasions of historical imperial powers. Characteristics like ‘individualized’, ‘experiential’, ‘ethical’, and ‘eco-friendly’ are used by marketers to differentiate new tourism from mass tourism in an attempt to conceal its similarity to the imperial projects of the past. But its purposes and consequences are exactly the same. In that regard, new tourists, even those with the best of intentions, are invading Goa. |

Wakefield $0.99 What is the connection between breast enlargement and building renovation, yoga retreats and gourmet restaurants, cell phones and globalization? Wakefield, both the title of Andrei Codrescu’s tragi-comic novel and the name of its alienated hero, poses these and other compelling perplexities of the modern age.Just as literary Fausts have done for centuries, Wakefield makes a bargain with Satan, who, as it turns out, is having his own existential crisis, due to bureaucratic headaches and younger upstart demons in the afterworld. The Devil gives him a year to find an alternative life. So Wakefield, a motivational speaker and architecture enthusiast, crisscrosses the country, meeting New Age gurus, billionaire techno-geeks, global pioneers, gambling addicts and models who look like heroine addicts, venture capitalists, art collectors, rainforest protectors, S & M strippers . . . all while anxiously trying to discover his authentic life.Part metaphysical mystery, part travel adventure, part architectural romp, Wakefield explores the late American century and, as his own “inner architecture” shifts, attempts to restore his world through a shocking act that baffles even his jaded Satanic Majesty. Andrei Codrescu gives us a novel of big ideas, hilariously absurd and brilliantly observed. |
